3 Essential Characteristics of Good Writers

Most writing advice articles are about writing. This one isn’t.

While good writing is important, and it follows good writers, being a good writer has more to do with what’s inside you. Because what’s inside always comes out.

Most people who want to start writing never start. Some start, then stop. So what does it take to be a good writer? Fair warning: all of these are harder than they sound, but the last one is where most writers vanish.

#1. Good writers practice.

Good writers don’t just sit down at a keyboard one day and magically produce the next bestseller.

The skills required for good writing can all be cultivated. That requires consistent practice – I’ve been writing online since 2021. The process is the reward. Learn to love practice, and you are well on your way to being a good writer.

Don’t worry about the views. I’m pretty sure my first article got seven views, and six of those were probably my Mom and me.

So on days when you don’t feel like opening your laptop or sitting down with pen in hand, do it anyway. Practice especially on the days you don’t feel like it.

Do it even if you think no one is watching.

#2. Good writers grow.

Most writers stop growing the moment they taste success.

They achieve some positive results, and then never grow from there. They become lazy and entitled.

When you write, search your writing for how you can improve it. Read other good writers and learn from them. Train yourself to look for ways to grow. Never be satisfied with “just good enough.” The best writers are always hungry to improve.

Carefully edit and examine everything you write. Make changes. Cut whole paragraphs. Don’t be afraid to blow the whole thing up. This is how you grow.

Ask: What could I do differently? This single question will take you farther than talent ever will.

#3. Good writers persevere.

Good writers have bad writing days.

What sets the good writers apart from everyone else is this: a good writer shows up again tomorrow. You will hear unfair and unkind comments. You will struggle sometimes to put anything on the page.

I’ve gotten unfair comments before on my writing, and it makes me want to stop writing altogether. But then, I come back tomorrow and start fresh again. Keep fighting through the frustration and tears. Show up anyway.

Becoming a good writer isn’t about being the most talented. It’s about never quitting.

Start being a good writer today.

Then show up again tomorrow.
